The scenic route – it may take longer, but it is usually worth it! In winter, please check the road conditions before setting off as Kirkstone Pass can be closed during bad weather. From Windermere take the Kirkstone Pass road (A592).
Continue up the pass. After 6 miles you will reach the top and the Kirkstone Pass Inn on the right hand side, later on the descent you will pass Brothers Water on the left. Pass through Patterdale and along the shores of Ullswater (the lake will be on your right). Continue through Glenridding and, after a further 3½ miles, turn left along the A5091. Continue for about 4½ miles, you will pass through the small villages of Dockray and Matterdale End, then – after about 1¼ miles on a sharp right hand bend you will come to the Rookin House drive on the left hand side. It is signposted.
If you reach the A66, you have missed the turn. Turn back along the A5091 for 1¼ miles and look out for the signs to Rookin House and the driveway on the right hand side.
